📊 GA4 Can Now See AI Traffic. It Still Can't See The Part That Actually Matters.

Google normalizing AI referral traffic as a dedicated channel group is a real step forward. Sessions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI assistants now land somewhere visible instead of disappearing into direct or unassigned. The channel is real and worth tracking.

The problem: GA4 only measures what happened after the click. The strategically important question is what is happening in AI answers before the click, and that is something GA4 structurally cannot answer.

Optimizing from this data alone is like managing a sales funnel by only reading closed deals.

Don't Touch The Data For 90 Days

The AI Assistant channel is too new for pattern recognition without a baseline. Annotate the implementation date and commit to 90 days of collection before drawing any strategic conclusions.

During that window, watch for one specific signal: sessions arriving through the AI Assistant channel that do not match your top-performing pages in traditional search. AI assistants are citing pages Google does not rank highly, and those pages are the fastest signal into what AI retrieval systems are actually rewarding independently of rankings.

Three Patterns. Three Different Problems.

GA4's AI channel data produces a diagnostic when read against citation tracking. Each combination points to a different fix.

GA4 alone cannot tell you which pattern you are dealing with. It only shows one end of the funnel.

Pair GA4's AI referral data with cross-platform citation tracking to close the gap. SEMrush's AI Visibility Toolkit tracks citation frequency across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode so you can match what is happening before the click to what is converting after it. You can try it free for 7 days.

Show Both Ends In Every Performance Review

GA4's AI Assistant channel covers the bottom of the AI funnel. Citation visibility covers the top. Stakeholders seeing only GA4 are making content and optimization decisions based on the portion of AI-influenced behavior that is easiest to measure, which is reliably not the portion most worth influencing.

One tool shows you who arrived. The other shows you who was sent. You need both to know what is actually working.

Together with Modash

The creators you're betting on might be the wrong ones.

Most influencer programs don't fail on execution. They fail on selection. The roster looked right, the content went out, and the numbers still didn't move.

On June 11th, Modash is hosting a free 3-hour session with the brand-side teams behind some of the most closely watched creator programs in the industry.

→ Why the creators who look perfect for your brand are often the worst fit for your launch
→ 3 rules Edelman uses to predict whether a creator will move perception or just move impressions
→ Why your highest-reach creators are often your lowest-trust ones, and what L'Oréal's team does instead

Cadence Melendez, Influencer Marketing at Moroccanoil, Brooks Miller, EVP of Creator Marketing at Edelman, and Eric Ford, formerly Global Communications at L'Oréal, are all on stage.

You’ll walk away knowing exactly which creators on your current roster don't belong there, and how to fix that before your next launch costs you.

💬 Meta expands AI tools for businesses

Meta announced a major expansion of its AI-powered business messaging products at its Conversations event in London. The updates focus on customer support automation, business discovery, operational assistance, and new tools for building AI agents at scale.

The Breakdown:

Meta expands automated support - Meta is rolling out its AI business agents globally across WhatsApp and Messenger after limited testing, allowing businesses to answer customer questions and collect information automatically around the clock.

AI agents expand further - Meta confirmed that business agents are also coming to Instagram, though access will eventually move into paid subscription plans designed for businesses of different sizes.

Finding businesses gets easier - Meta is adding new search and sharing features that help users discover businesses with AI agents on WhatsApp, making it easier for customers to start conversations and receive immediate responses.

Business operations get automated - Meta launched a new Business Agent Platform that connects with tools like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, while future agents will help with research, insights, scheduling, reminders, and competitive intelligence.

Meta is positioning AI agents as more than customer service chatbots. The company wants them to become operational assistants that help businesses manage conversations, gather insights, automate workflows, and reduce manual work across its apps.
